Radio frustration

It’s not easy being a Ferrari fan this year (thankfully I’m not one). It’s even probably not easier being Felipe Massa. Felipe’s frustration over the radio when told he had to slow down right in the middle of his battle with Vettel in order to make it to the finish and not run out of fuel is one of the highlights of the 2009 Spanish Grand Prix.

- Fuel consumption is too high on the last lap. We won’t get to the end, we need to do another stop. So you need to keep saving. You need to keep saving.
- Well what can I do?! I need to fight for the position. What can I do?

Kate’s Dirty Little Sister wins in China

The Formula 1 cars at the Shanghai circuit yesterday had a lot in common with boats. And like with boats Formula 1 cars need a nice female name for good luck. Sebastian Vettel’s first Red Bull car was called Kate. Unfortunately for Vettel and Kate she was crashed in Melbourne. The replacement got called Kate’s Dirty Little Sister, because she was faster and more aggressive, according to Vettel.

And Kate’s Dirty Little Sister sure excelled in the slippery conditions at the Chinese Grand Prix giving Red Bull its first win and Sebastian Vettel his second Formula 1 win.

26 laps behind the F1 wheel for Philipp Eng

Austrian Philipp Eng claimed his Formula BMW World Final prize this weekend and drove the BMW Sauber Formula 1 car at Autodromo Hermanez Rodriguez in Mexico City. The eighteen year old driver completed 26 laps.

Eng said: “This has been a fantastic experience. I quickly got used to the car and gained confidence with every kilometre. You soon work out where the ideal points are for gear shifting, and also learn the perfect braking points. It’s a very nice feeling if you can improve lap-by-lap.”

The previous World Final winners to have been given the F1 test prize are 2005 winner Marco Holzer and 2006 winner Christian Vietoris. Other Formula BMW drivers that has had the chance to drive a Formula 1 car with the aid of BMW are Nico Rosberg, Ho Pin Tung and Sebastian Vettel.

Webber’s broken leg gives youngsters opportunities

Red Bull Racing’s Mark Webber is going to miss out on probably all winter testing after his bike vs. car incident a few days back. This unfortunate event will be something positive for two of the youngsters from the Red Bull Driver Development Program. New Zealand’s Brendon Hartley and Switzerland’s Sebastien Buemi will take over the wheel of the Red Bull RB4 from Webber during testing at Jerez on December 15-17.

Sebastien Buemi will drive all three days while Hartley will drive the first day and then switch with Red Bull Racing’s new driver Sebastian Vettel. Buemi is rumoured to be in the running for a 2009 race seat with Scuderia Toro Rosso, so extra seat time to prove himself in a Formula 1 car might not be too bad for him.
